Day-10 San Antonio -on- bike

I got lucky today.   Their wet weather held off and I had a clear sunny day to explore on bike.
I had reconnoitered a 2-mile square around the hotel before registering yesterday, to get the lay of
the land.   After breakfast I took a last look at the map and went down to get the bike and helmet.
Headed north.   1st stop :  The Spanish Governor's Palace, originally part of the Presidio of San Antonio de Bexar,  the residence and working office of the captain of the presidio.

It's a  low-profile building, similar to the one in Santa Fe.   But my next stop .. whoa!
San Fernando Cathedral is .. impressive, outside and in,  here I am .. after befriending a tourist :

Here's what the inside looked like.      It holds the remains of those killed at the Alamo.

Here's a few more interesting buildings, afterwards :

Not a bad start of the historical places, but now .. it's time for Joe to have some fun.   On to the
Buckhorn Saloon Museum which includes the Texas Ranger Museum.    Yahooo!
AND .. it did not disappoint!     Established in 1881 by Albert Friedrich, opened with a standing
offer : "bring in your deer antlers, and you can trade them for a shot of whiskey or a beer".
In 1898, The Buckhorn Saloon is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders and where
Pancho Villa is rumored to have planned the Mexican Revolution.       How's that for history!
AND  ... many, many  ... stuffed animals   ..  enjoy the pic's :

I saw an old photograph of the San Fernando Cathedral in one of the Texas Ranger cases :

It took all of two hours to go through.   But .. I had to stop and get riding.    Here's my next stop at
The Alamo :

and of the monument :

Then, on another of my travel-whim-feelings .. I chased interesting buildings :

I started to bike south in search of another historical mission.   Here's a few pic's along the way :
...  a perfect day for a family to enjoy a neat water feature ..

a school along the way :

and then I discovered the River Walk trail .. beautiful, caught a fishing egret and sunning turtles :
this is the San Antonio River .

and then, getting off of the River Walk, I followed the Mission Trail road, and voila !  :

My trusty warrior bike in front of :  Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisine Concepcion de Acuna.
It was hot at this time of the afternoon,
San Antonio, says Google weather : " 85-deg., feels like 89 "
Headed home via dead reckoning and luckily found my hotel.   Time for a shower and a nap!
Today's mileage :  approx. 9

Early to bed,   oh dark thirty to rise,  jumping back on I-10  ..  New Orleans  or  bust!

  1. Looks like your trusty warrior bike served its purpose well! That room with all the taxidermy animals is a little nutty. Your interesting building photos are really nice!
