Day 8 - New Mexico and Texas HIGHWAYS
If you're following on a map :
Took I-40 east out of Albuquerque, to Clines Corners : built in 1937 at the crossroads of Route 66
and Hwy.285 as a much needed rest stop and store, Hwy.285 south to Encino to Vaughn to
Roswell, Hwy.380 east to Caprock to Tatum to Bronco to Plains to Tokio to Gomez to Brownfield,
Hwy.137 south to Union to Welch to Lamesa, Hwy.87 south to Big Spring to Sterling City,
Hwy.163 south to Barnhart to Ozona.
Roswell had these images .. everywhere.
A very impressive set of buildings in Roswell belonged to the New Mexico Military Institute.
It's one of four military junior colleges in the US. It has a 4-yr high school and 2-yr college.
The drive in Eastern New Mexico was during this spectacular sunrise :
A next stop, and a NEW scenic love, RANCH SIGNS :
It was sure a lot of fun driving through these 'working' towns. OIL is big in the Permian Basin!
Wind turbines are everywhere. A lot of irrigation 'circles'. Cattle, sheep, cotton, etc.
As much as I like to drive, especially here in Texas, I should've studied entomology! I could've
entertained myself by identifying and cataloging the many, many splatter fragments.
It was a beautiful final highway drive down 163. Rolling hills with scrub brush and cactus.
This is a Mom (Mary) picture .. she loved to take pic's of plants, flowers, and scenic views.
I started blogging to honor her 45 years of taking pictures and scrap booking our family's special events and travels. . . . I still can't believe she's gone. It's not fair. She was our family's strong pioneer that
we've been reading about on this road trip through the west.. Her journey with me to start a new life
in Oregon was very courageous.

A shorter drive tomorrow. About 200-miles to San Antonio. I should be able to explore in the PM.
today's mileage : 525
accumulated trip mileage : 2238

Mom's scrapbooks are such gifts. She was courageous to pioneer west and you are brave to do this expedition. Thank you for documenting your thoughts and travels, dad.
ReplyDeleteDad thanks for sharing your journey with us, the highs and the lows. It isn't fair that Mom is gone. We love you so much.
