Day-9 Texas Hill Country
Whoa! Can this trip get any better? Every day seems to be an eye-opening adventure!
What I thought was going to be a short boring drive into San Antonio on I-10, turned into a meandering
exploration of Texas Hill Country!
Driving along I-10, I decided to get off on Hwy.1674 and look at what's out there. I stopped to take
a picture of an interesting rock formation and a rancher in a pick-up stopped to make sure I was OK.
I thanked him for his concern. This reminds me of the Texas ranchers on a hunting trip to north
central Kansas that helped Jessie with a flat in Concordia. Friendly folks!
Along the same road, I had to stop for a deer crossing the road, it won't be the only time on this trip!
Here's a picture of the rock formation -and- some historical signs :
Kept on Hwy.1674 to the town of Junction, then jumped back on I-10. Kept driving until I saw
another opportunity to 'bolt'. Hwy.290 ! Wow! This was the best decision all day!
On the way to Fredericksburg I went. But first, the small town of Harper. Here's a few pic's :
and, only in Texas, just down the road .. another type of church :
Then, on to Fredericksburg. Founded in 1846, named after Prince Frederick of Prussia.
The emigration was in part .. the liberal, educated Germans fleeing the social, political and economic
conditions that later resulted in the Revolution of 1848. A very German looking town! Here's the
Catholic church :
Just outside of town I stopped at the .. Texas Ranger Heritage Center and Fort Martin Scott,
the "Guardian of the Texas Frontier", my trusty pioneering/exploring rig in the background ..
Then, continuing the whims-of-travel feeling of the day, I took off on Hwy.1376 to see where it
would take me. Lo and behold .. to Luckenbach, Texas, made famous in Willie Nelson and
Waylon Jennings' song .. "Luckenbach,Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)" in 1977. It's famous
for 'outlaw' country music. It hosts live music events every weekend. Here's a few pic's :
yeeehawww ... next town was .. Sisterdale, several wineries AND a dance hall!
Then .. on to Boerne ('bear-nay'), another German town, but not before being stopped by :
I knew I was on a 'wild goose' trip, but .. really ??!!
The Texas Hill Country is very, very beautiful. If you're in the area, see the towns listed above, in
addition to .. Kerrville and New Braunfels. Many, many picture opportunities.
Then, ... on to San Antonio. After checking in at the hotel, I decided to go get a bite (several!).
I went down to the RIVERWALK. Oh my! Hundreds of restaurants and shops along the river!
You'll need to spend at least 3-days in San Antonio! I chose 'The County Line', which specializes
in Texas barbeque. I chose the brisket. Look at this plate and a Texas beer : yummmmmy!
What a day!! Time for a good sleep. Tomorrow: I'll get on my bike and look at some missions
and the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum. If only I had a cowboy hat!
today's mileage : 234
accumulated trip mileage : 2472

234 miles! That's why you got to meander! Glad you got are stopping to see so many sites and that you have the chance to make decisions on a whim. Looking forward to photos from your bike riding tomorrow! Have fun!
ReplyDeleteLuckenbach, Texas, how neat. Makes me think Ada could have a sign similar to that St James.
ReplyDeleteHi Joe. Marleigh and I are really enjoying your free spirit approach to your trip. We love it when you just decide to head off in a new direction because it looks interesting. We have never been to San Antonio, but would like to make it someday. Thanks for all the great photos! All is well back in Or E gone (beautiful weather this week). Peace.
