Day-33 Illinois(Lincoln), Missouri, and Kansas
I sure needed that 'fall back' hour of sleep this morning! Felt great. It was going to be another FULL day! We took three dogs for a hike in the conservation area adjoining Charlotte's and Tom's 13-acres. Brisk damp morning. Walking poles in hand, we ventured down the FoxHole and Victoria's Secret trails (don't ask ..!)
Similar to taking everyone and dogs to the ranger station at Timothy Lake! Dog Pandemonium!
We then cleaned up and took off to Springfield in separate cars to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Here we are with the Lincoln family :
We first sat through two theater presentations, a look into the library in the Holavision theater, and a Disney-style of vibration/strobe/smoke type of Civil War years presentation in a 2nd theater. Well done. We then strolled through the 'Lincoln Early Years' part of the museum. After hugs and thanks,
I bid farewell to Charlotte and Tom and wound my way through Springfield to find Hwy.36 West.
Traveled over the mighty Mississippi and immediately exited to visit downtown Hannibal, Missouri, boyhood home of Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain). Another notable person from Hannibal was "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", a survivor of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. A couple pic's :
Gassed and coffeed up and returned to Hwy.36. Exited for Hwy.24 at Monroe City, neat church:
Paris, Missouri .. Monroe County (1831) court house :
Hwy.24 West through the middle of Missouri showed many types of farmland including many groves of pecan trees. It rained off and on as I listened to The Doors, Jim Morrison and .. for this drive .. the appropriate "Riders on the Storm" as I drove into .. Keytesville, Missouri.
Continuing on Hwy.24, had to do a U-turn when I saw this : (decorated hay bales ++)
I arrived at the intersection of Hwy.65 and made a late decision to investigate .. Carrollton, Missouri, coming into town from the industrial train-tracked side of town. Was I lucky?! Look at this mural :
and cobblestone street ..
and Carrollton's court house :
The statue is of General James Shields of Civil War fame -AND- the only person in history to serve as a senator for THREE different states!
Continued north on Hwy.65 and encountered, for the first time on this trip, an AMISH Mennonite buggy with three gentlemen driving along the highway shoulder.
It's fun to take the 'business' route of these smaller back roads through towns and discover interesting images and old buildings. Every state has many of these treasures. Slow down and explore.
Another long day due to my serendipity wanderings .. put me into Leavenworth about 6:30pm. My brother Robert was able to round up Christina and the kids and come pick me up for dinner. It was a fun reunion dinner! Tomorrow, I'll drive to Kansas City and meet Jason for a BBQ lunch & visit.
