Day-35 Kansas * SOUTH and WEST

What a difference a day makes in the weather!   The day broke with a fantastic sunrise, similar to the picture I shared with you when driving in New Mexico en route to Roswell.   Instead of taking I-35 on a diagonal to Wichita I opted for a right angle path.  Started South on Hwy.7.     This route closely follows a couple of historic trails.   One was the Potawatomi Trail of Death, a forced relocation march of the tribe from Indiana to the Osage River near Osawatomie.   The other was the military road from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Scott and Fort Gibson in Oklahoma.

Stopped in Louisburg, noted for their apples and cider mill.   Apples were bobbing down a watered conveyor system and being processed, it smelled great!

Stopped in Osawatomie to visit the John Brown Museum -but- I was too early, so I walked around the park and read several signs describing the confrontation of John Brown led anti-slavery forces against pro-slavery forces.   This was part of the "Bleeding Kansas" crisis of 1856.

My southernmost point of travel ended at Fort Scott.

Downtown Fort Scott was also historic and interesting :

Proceeded West on Hwy's 54, 75, 39, and 400.   Stopped at Yates Center,  several pic's :

You know you're on small roads in back country when you get stopped by these critters :

I made it to Wichita (Derby) before dark!, woohoo!    I could still see the Indians' smoke signals :

Bev and I went shopping at Sam's and Dillon's for food for her culinary lab she was teaching tomorrow.    Put away the need-to-be-refrigerated items and boxed the others and had dinner afterwards, and had some good visiting time.

today's exploration mileage :  300
accumulated trip mileage :     6461

  2. Love the Indian smoke signals! Louisburg cider is the best - used to buy it when we lived in KC. Too bad you didn't stop at the Li'l Red Hen Quilt Shop in Paola Ks -- great shop to buy fabrics! But I know you had things to see and places to go......
